On 4 November 2019, the Global Talent Independent (GTI) program was officially launched to provide a streamlined, priority pathway for highly skilled and talent individuals to obtain Australian permanent residency.
This program is another layer of the “Global Talent” initiative that the Department of Home Affairs (Department) have rolled out to support innovation in Australia, which joins the renamed “Global Talent – Employer Sponsored” (GTES) scheme. You can read a general summary of these two schemes here.
This article is regularly updated as further information becomes available to us, so please check back for further up to date and relevant information.
The below describes what this scheme is, what visa it utilises, and how to apply.
What is the Global Talent – Independent program?
The GTI program is designed to attract skilled migrants at the top of specific key sectors to Australia. It operates through an additional layer on top of an existing visa – being the Global Talent (Subclass 858) visa (discussed further below).
The GTI program involves the Department taking on a more active role by engaging “Global Talent Officers” (GTO) in key locations overseas to invite targeted individuals to apply for an Australian visa. GTOs will work with countries in their regions and attend key events/expos to promote this program.
Individuals interested in this program, should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) with the Department of Home Affairs (Department) to be invited to apply for this visa. A successful candidate would receive a unique identifier and be invited to apply for a Global Talent visa. Their visa application would receive priority processing (around 3 months). For the:
- 2019/20 migration program year – there were 5,000 spots;
- 2020/21 migration program year – there were 15,000 spots;
- 2021/22 migration program year – there were 15,000 spots;
- 2022/23 migration program year – there were 5,000 spots; and
- 2023/24 migration program year – there are 5,000 spots.
In particular, the Department aim to target individuals with profiles relevant to the following 10 sectors (set out in Direction 89) (see below).
The Department are also looking to target certain student cohorts with research that is internationally recognised and relevant to those targeted industries, including those who have recently (in the last 3 years) completed a PhD.
What is a Global Talent visa?
The Global Talent visa aims to attract individuals who have an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement” in either a profession, sport, the arts, or academia and research. The GTI program utilises the “profession” or “academic and research” aspects of this visa.
It also requires the applicant to still be prominent in the area, be an asset to the Australian community, demonstrate that they’d have no difficulty in obtaining employment (or being established independently) in the area, and be nominated by either an Australian individual or organisation with a national reputation in the area.

Am I eligible under this program?
Broadly speaking, to be eligible under this program, a candidate must:
- fit under one of the 10 targeted sectors outlined above; and
- have an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement” in their field, and either:
- be able to attract a salary equivalent to the Fair Work High Income Threshold (FWHIT), currently AUD $167,500; or
- have completed their PhD in the past 3 years (degree conferred).
If you do not satisfy the above, you would not be eligible under this program. Please note that being eligible is not necessarily the same as being likely to receive an invitation given the highly competitive nature of the program, which has increased due to the growing popularity and awareness as well as the reduce allocations.
What are the 10 target sectors?
Though we are not aware of any official definition of the 10 target sectors, Direction 89 represents a departure from the original 7 target sectors which largely related to “Tech”. This broadening moves away from that “Tech” emphasis and more into the Department’s other priority sectors.

How do I apply?
To access one of the 5,000 positions under the GTI for priority processing, there are three steps:
- the unique identifier and code issued by the Department
- a nomination and
- the Global Talent visa application itself.
Presently, to be considered under the GTI program, you would need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) here directly to the Department. You will need to have a nominator at this time, you can read some information about the Form 1000 and the nomination process here.
In our view, your GTI EOI should submit a covering letter, a CV, and evidence of your claimed achievements.
Once the referral has been assessed, the Department would email the candidate a unique identifier number and code to make the Global Talent visa application and be considered under the GTI provisions.
Although the application form may now be completed online, the Form 1000 (which has to be completed by the nominator) is still a paper-based form that then needs to be scanned and uploaded.
Your nominator must complete this form, and they must be an:
- Australian Citizen/PR/eligible NZ Citizen; or
- Australian organisation
who has a “national reputation” in relation to the area.
The nomination process is basically an endorsement of your skills, rather than a “sponsorship” with attached obligations (other than to tell the truth of course). You can read more about the nomination and the Form 1000 requirements here.
We recommend:
- reviewing your nominator profile to ensure that they have a “national reputation” before asking them to assist;
- sending the Form 1000 to your nominator when you first ask them to assist to ensure they’re comfortable with what’s on the form.
Both of these steps are to save an awkward conversation down the line.
The key criteria is being able to demonstrate that you have an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement” in your field. This is to distinguish “ordinary” individuals.
The successful individuals with whom Hannan Tew Lawyers have advised and assisted have: received awards/media coverage of their work, made publications (general/academic), hold patents, spoken at conferences, and/or have held senior positions at international companies.
The visa applicant must also be of good health and character, which means that police clearances and health examinations must be provided/undertaken.

The government lodgement fees for this application (set to increase from 1 July 2023) are:

How long will it take to receive an outcome on my EOI?
The pathway of obtaining priority processing via GTO referral has ceased. The Department’s website for the GTI program no longer lists GTO email addresses, and specifically states that “Departmental officers (formerly known as Global Talent Officers) no longer provide individual support to candidates”.
Practically, this means where it was previously possible to obtain EOI outcomes in 1 month or less for high profile candidates, all applicants will now be subject to “standard” processing times. As at the time of writing, the Department are currently processing EOIs submitted in January 2023, representing a 8-month waiting time.
We’ve seen this timeframe reduce significantly over the past 6 months as the Department seek to reduce the backlog of EOIs. We’ve also similarly had some candidates decided in as little as a month.
The Department have indicated that certain individuals who are endorsed by “Whole of Government partners” may be supported in exceptional cases.
What is the impact of Direction 100?
On 28 October 2022, the Department issued Direction No. 100 which outlines the order of consideration of skilled visas, including Global Talent visas (see here).
This sets out the order of priority for certain visas, and gives the highest priority to applications in relation to a healthcare or teaching occupation.
Within the list of priority, it also gives the highest priority to visa applications:
- where the primary applicant is located outside Australia at the time the visa application is made; and
- made by Hong Kong nationals.
How can we engage Hannan Tew Lawyers?
There are two ways to engage us, there are routes that can be taken:
- undertake an initial consultation to discuss your circumstances, and for us to provide advice and options. A fee of $330-440 is applicable which consist of a 1 hour discussion followed by written advice. This is if you want to discuss your circumstances further, get an idea as to process, confirm eligibility, and ask any other questions you may have. - if you are confident about eligibility and do not want the consultation and advice, we can go ahead and prepare a GTI EOI application for you for $4,400. However, if we later found that you were not eligible for the visa, we would only be able to refund that amount less the time already spent on your matter.
What is the process once we engage you?
In the first instance, we would need to send over our cost agreement (CA) outlining our fees, scope of services and terms and conditions of engagement for your review.
If you were happy with the contents, we would ask that you sign the document and deposit the professional fees upfront into our trust account. Your funds would remain in trust until your GTI EOI was lodged after which we’d issue an invoice and move the funds from trust in payment of our invoice.
Upon receipt of the signed CA and deposit, we would send a template statement, reference letters and a list of documentation required. A significant part of our services involve the drafting of the cover letter which we’d send for your review, and work together to finalise . We also review all documentation (including reference letters prior to signature), and make suggestions of what documents to include or not include.
We submit the GTI EOI as your appointed legal representatives and all correspondence related to your GTI EOI should be directed to us (with which we would of course update you).

What were the 14 November 2020 changes to the Global Talent visa?
What were the 20 January 2021 changes to the GTI program and EOI eligibility?
- were recent Masters or Honours graduates (who completed their studies in the last 3 years);
- had obtained a WAM of at last 80% or more; and
- the course was directly related to the relevant target sector.
These individuals were also considered to have the ability to attract the Fair Work High Income Threshold (FWHIT) requirements.
The Department have advised that the new changes apply “regardless of the date you submitted your EOI”, meaning it applies to existing EOIs which have already been submitted.
That is not to say that recent Masters or Bachelors (Honours) graduates should not apply, but that they must also demonstrate international recognition outside of their academic achievements in order to receive an invitation.
Note that candidates in the above cohort who received an invitation reference identifier prior to 20 January 2021 will still be eligible to lodge an application for a Distinguished Talent (subclass 858) visa with priority processing.
What were the 27 February 2021 changes to the Global Talent visa?

As a PhD graduate the strength of your application lies in your research quality. Having secured employment is strong evidence that your research is valued as either further funding is flowing to support that research, or a commercial business is seeking to apply your research. .

The Department has set 5,000 positions for the 2023/24 migration program year, demonstrating that this program will continue, but as a “niche” pathway for very strong candidates. This figure maintained that set for the 2022/23 year, which was the first time it was decreased significantly from the 15,000 positions for the prior 2021/22 and 2020/21 years. The program is in high demand, so we encourage eligible applicants to apply as soon as possible to take advantage of the positions.

My wife submitted her EOI application for GTIvisa on March 25th with form 1000, her profile: She has published over 60 journal articles(42 main and corresponding author) in reputable journals, 9 conference papers, 4 book chapters; 2 exhibition award, 2 scholarship awards; her Google scholar citations is now 1050. She is currently working as Research officer and her salary far below the salary threshold. She has not received any response. Did she has chance to get uid to apply for the GTIvisa?

After responding to s56 request, I got an invoice for 2nd VAC. I was planning to pay at a later time, since the timeframe to pay it is 70 days.
Weirdly, I got the visa granted before I have paid for it.

They should not have actually granted the visa without the VAC invoice unless you actually did meet the English criteria (which might be the case).

I got invited and submitted my Visa application on 12 April. Health examinations were done and cleared on 18th April. On 28th of April the case officer sent me s56 request for more information. They need police check from Australia but with old surname. For my family members they only need bridging Visa as our temporary work Visa was expired after we lodge Visa application.
I submitted all the bridging Visas but still wait for police check which may come this week.
My questions are:
1. How long to get GTIvisa if I submit police check this week?
2. Does it mean we met the English language requirements for my wife, as I have submitted her bachelor’s degree including a letter from the university president, where the language of instructions was in English?

They are 4 minor suggestions which I’ll address asap but it might take my University around a month (or so maybe) to give me the award letter. My question is, should I wait for a month or should I tell the department now given that I don’t know when they’ll open my application and I want them to know that I am done with my PhD (or close to it). Second EOI: 9 September, 2020. I didn’t know I could update my information via email, so ended up submitting another EOI.
PhD thesis submission: 28 August, 2020
PhD completion: 2 Feb, 2021
Publications: >20 at the time of EOI submission, including a few conference publications. Also had one in BMJ as the first author and two others with impact factor>7.
Provided a few updates including my completion of PhD and employment. Currently working as a senior data analyst with an annual package of 90k.

You don’t need any qualification to apply (you need to show international recognition).
There seems to be some confusion where people have assumed that if you are within 6 months from submitting a PhD and in a sector you can get an invitation but that’s not the case. The policy around PhD’s being submitted within 6 months is more in relation to avoiding the FWHIT. To your question, we’ve recently assisted a first year PhD candidate but they had significant achievements regardless of their PhD study. Most academics we assist are post-doc since they have more international recognition.

Since that application showing “under further assessment” ( since last 6 weeks) and normal processing time written 18-20 months. Is that normal time for taking decision on GTI visa application? You don’t need to contact the Department and normally it doesn’t take that long to process but it could be something as simple as your case worker going on leave.
Just ensure that you submitted the correct and complete documents and then wait for processing.

Your highest qualification is whatever you have achieved (Masters) and providing the Form 1000 in the EOI application is highly recommended.

After waiting for 6 months, a week ago, I received an email and my EOI for GTI Visa was reject. They indicated I didn’t meet the eligibility criteria but didn’t specify which criteria.
Let me provide some information about me. Would you happen to know why it was rejected. Could it because I don’t have a full time job?

– About 15 publications including high impact journals and A-ranked international conferences
– Currently working a casual lecturing job at two universities in Australia

I lodged my GTI visa application on May 17th. In the Immi Account, it currently states that evidence of character history, the section where Police Clearance certificate has to be attached, is the recommended document, not a mandatory one. However, when you click on the description in the Evidence of Character section, it states that anyone who is above 17 and who lived or travelled outside of Australia since the age of 16 and spent 12 months or more outside of Australia, is required to submit a police check.
In your experience with the applications, does the Department have to request that the applicant provide a Police Certificate if the above conditions apply to them, or should the applicant initiate Police Clearance check even before the Department asks them to submit it? For your information, I am an offshore candidate.

The Department will request them in due course, but to process your application as fast as possible you should obtain them befoer that.

Form 1000 (which I am submitting as an update to my EOI) asks if the the person is currently employed and if yes, how much is their salary. I am currently employed as a research officer for an international organization (my EOI highlights this fact that I am employed but I have not mentioned my salary in my EOI) but my salary is quite low as its only one day per week deal. My PhD is almost finished now and I am currently applying for postdocs. Do you think my low salary might go against me? So I am wondering if I am better off not submitting Form 1000 because I will have to highlight my current salary? Any advice would be great

I submitted my EOI on 24th March 2021 under financial services with over 3 years industrial experience in Australia and had a nominator with over 15 years experience and established in the field. I had submitted two reference letters, nomination form, client review and two of my articles that I had published in my sector. I have seen that people have got invitation even within three days of the EOI lodgement. Can I consider it a positive sign that I still haven’t got a rejection email? Any idea on what kind of applications get rejected? Its really the waiting period that is making me anxious.

I am now last semester of my PHD and will submit my thesis by November. I have 40+ publications most from before i started my PHD with around 700 citation. I was a clinical microbiologist in a tertiary care hospital for around 5 years and i also have experience of guiding some masters thesis student in my field. I got 3 PHD scholarship in Australian universities and chose to join current one. After i joined this university i got one college top-up scholarship, 2 competitive research grant based on my research and academic excellence. In my PHD i was working on finding treatment for drug resistant bacterial infection and have got some very novel findings on a molecule which acts as an antibiotics. I have presented these findings at conferences and have got great attention from the fellow researchers. Now, i am preparing manuscript on these findings to publish them as full papers. Apart from these i have also worked as reviewers for many reputed international medical journals and editor for 2 reputed international medical journals. Because i have seen many people who are still waiting for more than 7 months are have not heard anything. I my self have 35+ publication with 750+ citations, last semester PHD, 4 PHD full scholarship from different Australian university and chose current one. We’ve not seen any applications rejected on the basis of the nominator yet but they should have some national recognition. Scientific collaboration is only required for academic nominators (e.g. business leaders would not usually have this).

I think the median processing time is about 6-9 months (we’re seeing most of our October clients now get results). Don’t be too stressed about the delay though, it’s hard to tell what’s in the Department’s processes.

I sent my EOI in February 2021 and have received rejection. I think it may be because I haven’t finished my PhD yet (although I did provide letter from my PhD program coordinator that said I would submit in 6 months).
My profile:
– PhD student in Agricultural sciences (I will submit and defend my thesis in October 2021) in Spain. Currently offshore
– I was collaborating as a researcher at the University of Melbourne for 9 months (From January to October 2020).
– 4 Q1 articles published in international journals and have also been cited in internationally recognized journals.
– 4 communications to national (Spain) and international conferences.
– All my articles are related to the agri-food sector and food technology.
– I provided 2 letters of recommendation (one from my thesis supervisor and one from a professor at the University of Melbourne who was my supervisor during my time there).
– I provided several job offers that fit my profile and complied with FWHIT.
– Nominator: nationally and internationally recognized professor at the University of Melbourne in the agri-food field.
Do you think that I have not received an invitation now because I have not yet finished my PhD and that once I finish it and send the degree I will receive an invitation or simply I have not received it now because my profile is not good enough?

The Department are much stricter on candidates who have not finished their PhD yet, so it may be the case that you can make a stronger application then. Remember in all cases that simply completing a PhD is not sufficient, you need to show international recognition and achievements.

As a recent PhD graduate, a candidate doesn’t need to show that they earn at above the FWHIT so it shouldn’t impact you negatively. However, the practicality is that as the program gets more competitive, there are higher quality candidates you are competing against.

I have submitted my 858 visa application on 11th June 2021, and I received a letter from IMMI about my baby’s visa status yesterday. The content of the letter is below.
“ An electronically lodged application for a subclass 858 visa is not an application for a Bridging Visa (BV), therefore CAI, xxx (10 months baby) has not been granted a BV in relation to this application.
Departmental records show that CAI, xxx ‘s currently holds a BV in relation to an application for a subclass Post-Study Work Stream (VC 485) visa.
In the event that CAI, xxx ‘s current visa status changes before this application for a subclass 858 finalised, and he does not hold another Australia visa, CAI, XXX should apply for a Bridging E visa in association with this application.“
My baby’s 485 BV visa is still in effect. Is it means I do not need to do anything if my baby’s 485 BV visa still keep in effect before my 858 visa application finalised and grant the visa? Only if my baby’s 485 BV visa status changed from in effect to invalid before my 858 visa application finalised, I need to apply for the BVE visa for my baby. Do I understand it correctly?

If you don’t withdraw your Graduate visa then your baby’s BV related to that will stay in effect during processing. As long as your 858 visa is processed before any outcome on the Graduate visa there is no issue.
If you do withdraw your Graduate visa, then you need to ensure you apply for another BV for your baby to ensure legality (e.g. BVC or BVE).

The EOI isn’t a visa application so there is no legal requirement to have an updated passport. The Department could choose to reject your EOI if they find that you do not have a valid passport when they decide your application but in any case that point you could resubmit. Without having any experience in this, we think you should be able to submit with your expired passport number and update the Department later.

If you PhD finishes that far in advance of your Student visa expiry, yes the Department can take steps to cancel your Student visa if you do not switch over to another visa within a reasonable time (e.g. a Graduate visa).
You can apply for the GTI whilst holding a Bridging visa or other visa.

Also, I got an email saying that a bridging visa application can be lodged within 2 days after my submission. Is it common for everyone? I am presently on 482 and have another one year valid visa period.

Hi Kumar,
Unlike many other visas, Bridging Visas are not automatically granted by legislation for onshore 858 applicants
Notwithstanding this, sometimes the Department does grant the BVA (likely through a manual process).
In any case, it’s probably not required for you since you still have a substantive visa valid for one year, but to be on the safe side you should just manually obtain a BVA through your immi account.

We haven’t had any issues with visa processing (but EOI’s did slow down towards the end of the year).
Anecdotally, once health and character is completed most visas take less than a week to process.

I am going to submit my PhD in 31 December 2021. To commence my PhD, I was awarded an Australian Government Scholarship. I also got few other international scholarship. Besides, I have 40 plus publication and I am a reviewer of some of the top journals in digital communication. Now I am in last semester of the PHD.

Another question is What should be the expected salary in Form1000 while the candidate start job in Australia?
I am asking this question because my nominator suggests 90k to 100k per Annam, which is much lower than the threshold income level for GTI.

You can submit your EOI now and with processing times, update it with your PhD completion evidence when you get it.
As a recent graduate you are also exempt from the FWHIT so it’s okay that your nomination form has a salary below the FWHIT (though of course you are still competing with other applicants so the higher the better).

I got rejected a year ago for my EOI of Global Talent visa. The department at that time asked me if I don’t provide them with the Ph.D. completion letter in two weeks, they will reject my EOI.
Currently, I have a Ph.D. with strong points such as 40+ publications, 70+ reviews, 3 awards during the Ph.D., and I got a position at one of the Australian universities.
Should I mention that I got rejected before to the department when I apply again?

Yes, it’s totally fine to apply for another visa process whilst your GTI EOI is pending. In fact, we encourage you keep your options open since the GTI EOI is not a guarantee. The only thing you should consider is that you do not provide false or misleading information.

Unfortunately, I submitted with an old form 1000 (dec 2020 form but it has recently been modified). Is it wise to update the EOI because I have heard that CO may not like it that why such information was not provided at first instance. Whilst it’s not the best strategy to continuously update the Department, you should definitely update the Department if there has been some improvement or in your case, you’ve forgotten key documents.

To avoid 5010 your husband will need to demonstrate that either (a) the course was designed to be undertaken over a period of less than 12 months or (b) you have spent at least 2 years outside Australia since ceasing the course or (c) there are compelling or compassionate reasons that impact the interests of Australia or an Australian citizen / permanent resident / eligible New Zealand residents which convince the Minister that you should be able to apply for the visa.

There is no specific format for the Department to attach the documents to your file as long as they have relevant information (i.e. a passport number and your full name).

Currently applications are being processed from October 2021.
I note that a nominator is highly recommended as we have seen some instances where the Department doesn’t issue an EOI without it. Depending on the specifics of your work, you could try Engineers Australia or ACS.

I have submitted my EOI in last week of March 2021 with a PhD under “Resources” from overseas. I didn’t receive any response yet. In last 5 months I have published two more papers and gained additional 100 citations on my google scholar account. Should I update my CV and send to the email address ([email protected])? Or the officers will look into my google scholar account and LinkedIn as I provided these links.
Does passport bio page of nominator play any crucial role? As passport is a confidential document. the nominator will not agree to provide for sure. Though passport of nominator is not mandatory to upload in the EOI form, but would that hamper my application?

Your current salary is not the only indicator of your earnability (e.g. if you are a start-up founder it might be the case that you are getting a low salary for future gains).

You meet the base eligibility, though they do scrutinise PhD candidates more than PhD gradutes so you need to show that your research is exceptional.
Generally the processing time is about 6-9 months (though can be shorter or longer).

It’s not really a change (though it’s written that way). The point is that PhD graduates and students are not eligible for the GTI visa on the basis of their qualifications alone (and this has been the case for some time practically as those applicants do not get invited). You need to show international recognition in addition to just your qualifications. In this way, it’s not compulsory to complete a PhD for the GTI program (you just need to show international recognition). The main consideration with the PhD is that if you didn’t complete it in the last three years, then you do need to demonstrate a salary above the FWHIT.

I completed my PhD course five years ago. I have published 70 more papers, including 30 peer-reviewed journal articles in the highly cited journals and over 40 conference papers. Also I have an Australian nominator for this program and I am still prominent in my field of expertise. In automatic message form [email protected], there was mentioned: to be eligible, PhD graduates must have their PhD degree conferred in the last 3 years in order to satisfy the requirement to still be prominent in their area of academia and research at the time of application.

Keep in mind medical checks may take quite a bit of time in metro areas because of Covid, and BUPA website is not very user friendly for choosing the closest date available. I suggest you call severeal regional hospitals in the BUPA list and arrange your checks outside metro area, that saved me about 2 months.

In general, the Department will be leniant on first entry date travel whilst COVID-19 restrictions are in place.
Once things open up, you may need to go through an older process of obtaining approval from the Department if you miss out on your first entry date.

2) Engineers Australia – They list all engineering sectors
3) Australian Digital Health Agency – This is the most relevant as I see, but they do not mention a nomination process.

I have concern about the nominator. I submitted my EOI last month. My nominator was professor in a well-reputed university of Australia but lost it due to COVID early this year. The nominator is currently an academic dean of Academies Australasia Polytechnic (AAPoly- a college/chain of colleges) but works as Adjunct/Honorary professor of two Australian universities (including the previous one). He has an exceptional track record and well-reputed in my area of research and also we have multiple research papers together. Do you think I need to change the nominator as he is no longer a permanent university Professor? I can opt for a senior lecturer though (someone at my current level but his research profile is way below the level of AAPoly dean). Any suggestion in this regard based on your vast experience?

I have a question about the Increased flexibility for citizenship applicants for people with distinguished talen Visa including Global Talent Visa.
I am living in Australia since 2010 but I was overseas from 01 November 2017 to 18 April 2019. Then from this date I am still in Australia. I was granted a global talent visa on 13 May 2021, which is a permanent residency. I worked at Australian university as a researcher for 2 years and I will work in another Australian university in next two weeks.
I have seen some news in the immigration website on 14 September 2021 about Increased flexibility for citizenship applicants for people with distinguished talen Visa including Global Talent Visa.

It was mentioned in the immigration department website that (The special residence requirement provides that an applicant has held a valid visa for the last four years, living in Australia for at least 480 days during that time, and must have been a permanent resident and in Australia for 120 days in the year immediately before applying).
I can meet all the requirements such as 120 days as a permanent resident and already lived in Australia for 480 days since 18 April 2019.
My question is: I didn’t understand what they mean by having a valid visa for the last 4 years?. If I have a valid visa for the last 4 years then there is no need for special residency.

To your question, the special residency requirement reduces the number of days required from the general residency requirement. Both require that you held a valid visa at least 4 years ago, but there are reduced physical periods in Australia for the special residency requirement. In any case, though there is no legislation yet, the Minister’s announcement indicates “the special residence requirement will now also apply to past, present and future distinguished talent stream visa holders.” That is, it does not seem to indicate it will include Global Talent stream holders. We’ll post an update when the legislation is released.

The first entering date to Australia is on 28 June 2010. But on 01 November 2017 I went overseas and back to Australia on 18 April 2019 to start working as a research scientist for two years. Since 18 April 2019 I am still in Australia.
So, if I want to calculate a valid Visa for the last 4 years from today then it will be from 27 September 2017 to 27 September 2021 which includes absent period from 01 November 2017 to 18 April 2019 (17.5 months).

I’m very curious about this waiting time. My wife applied in March under education sector with a form 1000 nominated by a distinguished Prof. in her field as a chemical engineering. She later realised that her area of specialization as a recent PhD best fit in resources sector. She sends email through the gti website provided informing them to change it from education to resources. How would she know if they have change? Can she send another email to ask if they have really changed the sector? We realized that more attention is given to resources than education with her current profile. The second question, what is time frame of rejection at EOI stage? Is long waiting for Uid a good sign as an offshore applicant? I was told that if someone EOI application has been delayed for more than 3 months without rejection, the person’s EOI application can still receive UiD because they easily reject EOI application now if someone doesn’t meet their criteria and eligibility. I don’t know how true was that,

The Department won’t confirm that they have received an update (apart from the auto email) but you can assume they have received any correspondence you have emailed them.
Re the processing time, it can be 10-12 months now due to the high level of cases so I wouldn’t put too much thought into that.

Currently, I am an assistant professor (Equivalent to Level C) with a salary way below the threshold (typical salaries in low-income countries but I had recently been shortlisted for an australian university as senior lecturer position, though i was not selected due to my visa status). Also, the september newsletter states that “A senior academic and researcher appointment at Australian Academic Level D or E, or their international equivalents in fields other than Education, may be considered an indicator of internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement in the Education sector. Candidates should provide evidence of publications, citations, patents, awards and/or other accolades.”. How do you interpret it? does it mean anyone below academic level D is not eligible?

The EOI program does give case officers a wide discretion and there are cases of people outside of the guidelines who get invites (and conversely, people within guidelines who don’t).
Re the requirement for an Academic Level D or E, that is specifically for people applying for the Education sector.
As a Computer Scientist you wouldn’t be applying under the Education sector in which case you can still apply as a Assistant Professor.

In the rejection email, they have advised me to re-apply after I receive my PhD degree. I received my PhD degree recently in August this year and currently working as a postdoc. I submitted my EOI in August 2021 including all the necessary documents (Form 1000, employment contract, publications (7), awards and conferences). Currently, I am on a student (Subclass 500) visa which expires in Jan 2022, which means I need to get a temporary graduate visa (subclass 485) in the next couple of months. Can you please let me know your experience in this case, and if there is a way to expedite the process? I will sincerely appreciate your guidance here. Thank you.

You can write to the Department inbox and request an expedited visa on compelling and compassionate reasons, but it does not appear that you have any.
The most appropriate action for you is likely to apply for and obtain the Graduate visa so you can ensure your continued stay in Australia.

Hi guys and admin, my EOI got rejected today after almost 12 months of waiting. I applied on 20 october 2020. Medtech sector. My profile: i am recently a final year phd student at a australian university and will submit my thesis in 8 months, have 40 plus international peer reviewed journal publication first author in 15 plus publication with total citation 770. I have reviewed many journal articles and is academic editor to two well reputed journals in my field. I had got phd scholarship from 3 australian university before choosing to join current university. After i joined the current university i got two competitive research grant, one publication grant, and an additional college scholarship on basis of my academic and research excellence. They have just sent a general rejection email saying i do not meet criteria for international recognization, and salary (of course i do not meet this at this stage)

One thing we can pick up on is that although you generally have a good profile, you can’t be exempt from the “capacity to earn at above the FWHIT” requirement if you are within 6 months of graduating your PhD.

I applied for GTI in July 2021, but I still haven’t heard from them. I have submitted the 1000 form with my application. My nominator is Research Fellow.
Today, I received an email from ACS agreeing to support a nomination.
My question is, does ACS nomination boost the chance of getting an invitation? If I submit another “1000 form” from them.

Hi Ali,
We don’t think that multiple Form 1000’s help, but there is no harm updating the Department with the ACS Form 1000 if your previous nominator was not as “nationally recognised”.
